Hunsader Farms, home of annual Pumpkin Festival, faces $7.2 million foreclosure suit

Hunsader Farms is facing foreclosure, according to court records. documents filed in Manatee County Circuit Court in early September.

However, a member of the Hunsader family said the matter had been resolved.

“Everything is fine,” said David Hunsader, one of the defendants named in the suit filed in early September in the Manatee County Circuit Court. “Nothing is happening. It’s over.”

Court records indicate the case remains pending. A court summons, as well as a copy of the complaint, was issued for one of the defendants Monday, according to court records.

Named in the lawsuit as defendants is Hunsader Farms Inc., as well as Michael Hunsader, Constance Hunsader, David Hunsader, Bridge Creek Inc., and Cathy Marie Raye.

The local farm is best known for its annual pumpkin festival, which kicks off at 9 a.m. Saturday., U-pick operations and petting zoo.

Despite news of foreclosure, Hunsader Farms presses ahead with festival

MANATEE COUNTY — This weekend, head east on State Road 64 until the stores with candy corn and plastic Halloween costumes disappear. Keep going when the road narrows to two lanes and wooden barns dot large open farm land. 

Go beyond the DeSoto Speedway with the revving stock car engines until the road breaks off to Waterbury. There you’ll find the Hunsader family farm and nearly three decades of fall tradition — a fall tradition that appears unspoiled despite a global pandemic and concerns that the beloved Manatee County farm is facing foreclosure. 

The 29th Annual Pumpkin Festival — seen by many locals as the true beginning of fall — will press ahead on Saturday and Sunday and continue every weekend through Oct. 25, according to the farm’s website. The farm’s U-pick fields also appear to be open until June.

PROVIDENCE — Opponents of the development of large solar installations in rural and suburban Rhode Island argue that sprawling tracts of photovoltaic panels mar the character of their communities.

They worry that in many cases construction of the industrial energy projects mean clear-cutting acres of woodlands or building in open fields, leading to a loss of prime green space.

Now, it looks like they have something else to be concerned about.

After analyzing thousands of property sales in Rhode Island and Massachusetts over a decade and a half, economists at the University of Rhode Island have concluded that solar development is having a negative impact on nearby home values.

Corey Lang, associate professor of natural resource economics, and doctoral student Vasundhara Gaur found that prices of homes within a mile of a solar installation declined by 1.7%. Homes within a tenth of a mile went down by 7%.
