A former ‘home for girls’ dating back to the Victoria era is up for sale in Mumbles.

Mount View can be found at 53 Overland Road and is currently on the market for £829,950.

The property, with a total of seven bedrooms, has a fascinating history, having been established in 1885 by the Waifs and Strays Society.

It was opened as an industrial school for girls, and became known under various names, including the ‘Swansea Girls’ Home’ and ‘The Mumbles Home for Girls’.

It offered accommodation for 25 girls aged between seven and 15, and it was officially opened by the Bishop of St David’s on July 1, 1885.

The ground floor had been used for school rooms, a kitchen, pantry, scullery and a bathroom, whilst the first floor was a sewing room and a sitting room of the matron, Miss Langley. The top floor contained eight small dormatories.

That was until it closed in 1902 and became a private residence.
